As many of you know I have been on bed rest for the last few weeks due to pre-term contractions. We thought the baby was doing just fine based on the stress tests performed at the hospital. His heart rate was always strong and he had a high activity level. I felt good about just sticking to the bedrest and that things would work themselves out how they were supposed to.
A few days ago though we met with the High-risk pregnancy doctor and had an ultrasound to determine the growth of the baby. There has been a concerning drop off in his growth pattern from his last measurements. I am now required to have a stress test and a growth Ultrasound twice weekly with the high risk Dr. to watch his progress. In addition to the concern over the decline in his growth the amniotic fluid level is quite low as well. We have since learned that any measurement under ten is a warning sign to keep watch and make sure it doesn't drop much lower. If you get to five they typically deliver the baby immediately because there is an increased chance for cord compression and fetal distress. The amniotic fluid is necessary for protection to the baby and for their organ development and other development as well. I found out that my fluid level is a 5.6 or 5.9.
Because of the combination of factors, preterm contractions, decline in growth and low fluid levels there is quite a bit of concern at the moment for the baby.
Today at 1:45 I go in for another Ultrasound to measure the fluid levels, growth and to monitor the activity. They will then determine based on their findings what the next step is. It is possible they might admit me to the hospital and put me on an IV to try and increase my fluids, or even induce labor.
We will keep you posted as to what we find out and the condition of the baby and the next step to be taken in his care.
We are so grateful for the meals prepared from our wonderful ward members, those that have helped with our boys, the beautifully talented Young women who spent their afternoons with us last week before school started and our wonderful family members who have expressed concern and support and will even be fasting this weekend for our little boy.
