Grant had a dentist appointment today and was given the good/bad news that he has two large cavities that will need to be filled and possibly crowned. The good part is that he will get some laughing gas before the procedure to lesson the pain for everyone involved. Boy, this dentist is one heck of a salesman to get my 5-year old excited to have two teeth filled.
Grant helped me out a lot today. I started the day like usual, rushing to get as much work done as possible while Grant played a few games on sesamestreet.org. I extended his usual 20 minute daily media limit to one-hour (i think I extend daily) thinking I could get more work done. And as usual I felt rushed and guilty the whole time. I should have Grant work with me, how will he learn about doing his part, where will he learn to have a good work ethic, etc., etc. So several hours later (Grant was at the Dentist with his Dad by this time, not in front of the computer) once Grant returned from the Dentist I started feeding Spencer some rice cereal while trying to get lunch ready, when a brilliant idea popped into my head, why not have Grant feed Spencer?
So I asked him if he would be willing to try. Who am I kidding, I guilt tripped him into doing it. I told him that we all need to help out at home and he had a wonderful opportunity to help his little brother do something that he couldn't do for himself. Grant was apprehensive at first mainly because he didn't want to be slimed. Side note: Matt and are I are quite pleased that Grant has developed an aversion to slime. He has been the main slimer for so long that we thought we were in for eighteen years of multiple outfit changes per day, sticky walls, and messes everwhere. That's another story for another time.
Back to Grant feeding Spencer. It started out pretty well. Grant would give Spencer a bite laugh and then run away. I guess it weirded him out or something I am not sure. Finally, I convinced him he should not run away laughing after each bit. So little by little Spencer started to gain and then lose his patience and what was becomming briefly a tender experience with two smiling boys turned into a slapping match for Spencer. Spencer did not like his brother feeding him and tried everything he could think of to get him away. Grant bless his heart had caught the spirit of service and kept saying don't you know what I am doing for you. I am trying to help you get some food or something to that effect. It was pretty funny! I was actually pleased with the situation even though it ended badly for Spencer. Grant seemed to really enjoy it and was very proud of himself.
Grant also helped me fold some wash cloths today and was very eager to follow some new dinner time rules. I love Grant so much and am enjoying spending my time with him each and every day. He is turning into a sweet and caring big brother and a wonderful son. Grant's Favorite thing to do each day is to run out to Daddy after he has said good-bye for the day and get just one more hug and kiss. He calls this extra's. Spencer has even gotten into the hang of it. We all love Grant so much and don't know what we would do without his funny jokes, smiling face, and sweet spirit.
