I have wanted my boys to be able to take music lessons even before they were born. The first music lessons ever started with Grant. At 3 or 4 he began lessons on the violin. After a few lessons we learned that he was indeed musically talented and had a memory you wouldn't believe. However, he was also very passionate and boisterous. After just a few lessons the teacher thought it might be better to hold off for a few years before we tried music lessons again. :) I loved and miss that passionate, boisterous 3/4 year old.
Fast forward 7 years. I still found myself wanting to provide music lessons for my boys. I asked around about teachers but never felt like I found the right fit. Until... Makenzi moved into our ward. Theresa Pesci sang her praises in Relief Society one day and said that it was such a privilege to have someone of her caliber living in our ward and offering piano lessons. She strongly encouraged anyone interested to contact her and sign up. I looked in to it, spoke with her and signed up my boys. Initially, I was not impressed. She sent me an e-mail shortly after we signed up saying she thought it would be better not to start the boys at the same time. That she was afraid a sibling rivalry would develop and ruin the experience for them. I was a little annoyed because I really wanted them both to start. It took me awhile to respond but eventually figured that she had more experience than me and even though it bugged me I would go with her recommendation.
Spencer waited till fall to begin. I am so glad I listened to her. Grant had some time to get a bit of a head start and has really loved playing the piano since then. I think he appreciates having a bit of a lead and having materials that he works on that are his own. He loves having a little brother eager to make the progress he has made and especially loves and respects his teacher. I can't say enough about her teaching technique, the calm clean environment of her home. Her playfulness with my boys. I feel like Heavenly Father made us aware of a wonderful situation for my boys and I am ever so grateful.
Spencer loves taking lessons from Makenzi too. It has given me an opportunity to do something with each boy each day one on one. I love sitting with them and going over what they are practicing...having some one on one time. Josh likes to play the piano while they are practicing so that can be a little frustrating by they deal with it.
I take notes during the lesson so we can go over what we learned over the course of the week.
We love Piano. Now if we could just find a good used piano on craigslist we would be set. For now we have a nice keyboard that Grant got for Christmas a few years ago.
